Start with what they already survived

Drought, then deluge, in the same season. Kerala went through June and July 2026 with a monsoon rainfall deficit of roughly a third. Then, on the first day of August, parts of the state received more than 300 mm of rain in a single day, with one station in Pathanamthitta district recording 361 mm. Flash floods and landslides followed. This is the pattern worth teaching, because it confuses people: a state can be short of rain for two months and then drown in a day. Warmer air holds more moisture and releases it in shorter, harder bursts. The total can go down while the danger goes up.

A monsoon nobody could read. Across India, the 2026 season swung between long dry spells and violent downpours, ending up in deficit overall while still producing floods, flash floods and landslides. Assam was flooding despite a large rainfall shortfall. For a farming country, an unpredictable monsoon is arguably a worse problem than a weak one, because you cannot plan around it.

Heat as a mass-casualty event. Europe ran through repeated heatwaves from late May 2026 onward, with 46.5°C recorded in Sicily in July. Excess deaths across the continent are estimated in the tens of thousands. Heat kills quietly, mostly old people and outdoor workers, which is why it rarely gets the news coverage a flood does.

Fire and smoke crossing borders. More than three million hectares burned in Canada, and the smoke drifted far enough to put New York State under air quality advisories. Nobody in New York started that fire. That is the point.

Teach the part that makes students think, not just worry

Here are the fact that belongs in every climate lesson, and rarely appears in one.

When researchers at World Weather Attribution examined the 2026 floods in northeastern India, which affected more than half a million people and killed close to a hundred, they concluded that the primary drivers were not warming at all. They pointed to rapid urbanisation, deforestation, the destruction of wetlands, and structural failures. The rainfall itself was not exceptional by historical standards.

That finding does not weaken the case for climate action. It sharpens it. It teaches something more useful than alarm: a disaster is what happens when a hazard meets a vulnerable place. You can reduce the hazard by cutting emissions, and you can reduce the vulnerability by not building over the wetland that used to absorb the water. Most real progress comes from doing both.

Students who learn this stop being passive recipients of bad news. They start asking better questions. Was that flood worse because of the rain, or because of what we did to the drainage? That question has a local answer, and local answers lead to local action.

What coming together actually looks like

Climate education fails when it ends with a list of individual virtues. Switch off the lights, carry a bottle, plant a tree. These are fine habits and they are not the mechanism by which anything changes at scale. Worse, they hand a teenager a burden they cannot possibly carry alone, which is the fastest route to despair and disengagement.

The more honest framing is that individual action matters mostly as a route into collective action. Here is what that looks like at each level.

In the school. Audit the building. Where does the electricity go, how much water leaks, what happens to the waste, how hot do the classrooms actually get in May? A measured audit run by students produces a document, and a document can be taken to an administration. This is civics as much as science.

In the neighbourhood. Map what protects you. Which trees provide shade on the walk to school, which drain floods first, which lake or wetland has been filled in for construction in the last ten years. Local records, satellite imagery and neighbours' memories are all available to a determined fifteen-year-old. Communities that know their own vulnerabilities argue for themselves more effectively.

In the city. Early warning systems work. Disaster deaths are dramatically lower where warning coverage is good, which is why the World Meteorological Organization has pushed its Early Warnings For All initiative so hard. Students can find out whether their own area is covered, whether the alerts reach people who need them, and in which languages. Where the answer is no, that is a campaign.

At the national and global level. This is where the emissions are actually decided, through energy policy, transport, building codes, and land use. Young people cannot vote on most of it before eighteen, but they can testify, organise, and be extremely inconvenient to ignore. The generation making these decisions will not live with the results. The generation being taught about them will.

The point of teaching it at all

The goal is not to produce anxious children who can recite carbon budgets. It is to produce adults who can look at a flooded street and correctly identify three things: what the weather did, what our choices did, and what could be changed before the next one.

That is a skill, and like any skill it is learned by practising on real cases. There is no shortage of those now.

Why climate needs to be taught as something happening now, not something coming later.

For most of the time climate change has been in school textbooks, it has been taught in the future tense. Sea levels will rise. Crops will fail. Someone, somewhere, will eventually have to deal with it.

That framing has quietly stopped being true, and the students sitting in classrooms this year are the first generation for whom it never was true. They do not need to imagine the consequences. They have been living inside them, checking their phones during a red alert, missing school because a road washed out, sitting in a room where the fan does nothing.

So the honest way to teach this subject now is to start with what actually happened, and work outward from there.

Small actions create meaningful

lasting change.

The rain has always come hard in August. What changed is that we paved the wetland that used to take it, cut the slope that used to hold, and built where the water has always wanted to go. Climate change is loading the gun. We keep choosing where to stand.
